Islamic Republican Guard must ‘break away’ before regime change can occur in Iran
Former foreign minister Alexander Downer comments on the Iranian protests, claiming that if the Islamic Republican Guard supports the Ayatollah and the theocracy, regime change appears less likely.
“We can’t be sure … let’s remember back in 2009, there were similar protests in Iran,” Mr Downer told Sky News Senior Reporter Caroline Marcus.
“The difficulty for the protestors is that the Islamic Republican Guard … backs the Ayatollah and backs the theocracy, and until they start to break away, you can’t see the regime changing anytime soon.”
