Is Everybody Overreacting? | Skydance and “MAGA Hollywood”

Skydance is the new name for the merged Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, and the reaction has been loud. Here is the business case nobody is making.

On October 2, David Ellison announced that once the $110 billion Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger closes, the combined company carries the Skydance name. Paramount and Warner Bros. stay on as sub brands, and the ticker moves from PSKY to SKYD. Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, CBS, HBO, HBO Max, CNN, Nickelodeon, MTV, Paramount+, Discovery, TNT and TBS all end up under one roof, with former Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz coming in as co CEO.

A lot of people are reading this as Hollywood getting flipped. I think that read misses what is actually going on. This looks like self preservation. Linear television is shrinking, streaming is expensive to run, and consolidation is how legacy media tries to survive the next decade. Expect more mergers, not fewer.

The MAGA Hollywood framing also does not hold up against the entertainment slate. Skydance built its name on Top Gun Maverick, Mission Impossible, Star Trek and Transformers. That is four quadrant blockbuster filmmaking. Whatever you make of the news division, the film and television output was never the ideological operation people are describing now.

What this merger actually threatens has nothing to do with politics. Two studios under one owner means fewer buyers for your pitch, fewer greenlights, and less leverage for everybody trying to make a living creating things. That is the part worth watching.

Which brings it back to the same lesson I keep landing on. Ownership is the whole ballgame. Build your own.
