Why THE MUMMY Failed (And How To Fix It)
Brendan Fraser returning for The Mummy could finally save the franchise — but only if the new movie remembers what the story is really about.
The Mummy has one of the longest histories in monster cinema. The original 1932 Universal horror film introduced audiences to Imhotep, a tragic figure driven by love that refuses to die. Decades later, the 1999 reboot transformed the concept into a swashbuckling adventure starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan.
That movie worked because it balanced action, horror, mythology, and romance. The love story between Rick and Evie grounded the spectacle, while Imhotep’s tragic motivation kept the monster rooted in emotion.
But later attempts to revive the franchise lost that identity. The 2017 Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise tried to launch the Dark Universe, prioritizing franchise setup over storytelling — and audiences quickly checked out.
Now a potential 2028 sequel has a rare opportunity. By bringing Fraser and Weisz back, the film could return to the adventurous tone fans loved while giving Rick and Evie a final chapter.
In this video, we explore the emotional core of The Mummy, why previous reboots failed, and how a new sequel could finally close the tomb on this franchise the right way.
