Walmart has made a surprisingly direct promise as it expands digital shelf labels across its stores: it says your personal information will not be used to decide what price you pay.
CEO John Furner says Walmart will not use a shopper’s income, purchase history, identity, AI conversations or the time of day to create personalized prices. His message was simple: Walmart will “price the product, not the person.”
The pledge follows growing concern about digital price tags, which allow retailers to update thousands of prices almost instantly. Walmart says the technology is about accuracy and eliminating the slow process of replacing paper labels—not introducing surge pricing for groceries.
The company also says its Sparky AI assistant may personalize recommendations and service, but will not use customer conversations to secretly calculate how much an individual might be willing to pay.
There is currently no evidence that Walmart was already charging different in-store prices to individual shoppers. Digital labels do not prove personalized pricing is happening. However, the technology makes rapid price changes possible, which is why customers, lawmakers and consumer advocates demanded answers.
The FTC has separately warned companies that they must clearly disclose when personal information is used to set prices. Walmart’s promise is a voluntary corporate policy rather than a permanent legal ban, but the backlash has now forced America’s biggest retailer to draw a very public line.
