UK Home Secretary defends controversial early release child sex offenders, rapists and killers

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has defended the release of child sex offenders, rapists and killers as part of her early release scheme.

Mahmood argued that prison conditions had worsened since the criminals were first sentenced and that action was needed to address the crisis.

The scheme will take effect in October, leaving several victims enraged that perpetrators of crimes against them would benefit from the early release.

According to The Australian, roughly 5,000 prisoners will benefit from the scheme, despite some serving only a third of their sentences.

The home secretary asserted that the prison system was “on the point of almost total collapse” and that a solution was needed.
