Troops ‘scheduled to arrive’ in Gaza, US tells UN Security Council

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz has told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that troops from partner countries were “scheduled to arrive to keep the peace” in Gaza.

Uganda, Morocco and Kazakhstan have offered thousands of troops, though deployment is moving slower than Washington wanted, Waltz said.

“Tactical vehicles are already at the ISF (International Stabilization Force) logistics base, countries as far as Uganda, Morocco, Kazakhstan have offered thousands of troops to this effort.

“No, they are not moving as quickly as we would like, but they are moving. And yes, the disarmament of Hamas must and will be closely scrutinized. It must be verified by objective parties.”

Board of Peace Director-General Nickolay Mladenov said Hamas and other Palestinian factions had accepted a roadmap to hand over weapons and transfer governing authority to a UN-recognised transitional administration, calling their July 30 acceptance a “historic breakthrough”.
