This Isn’t Just an Xbox Problem

Xbox is shaking up studios — some closing, some downsizing. And I called the Game Pass issue a long time ago. But this isn’t just an Xbox problem. This isn’t just a gaming problem. Legacy entertainment industries across the board are having to restructure because the old model doesn’t work anymore.
When you look at budgets versus returns, just outspending everybody is no longer enough. The landscape has changed. Solo developers and small teams are doing competitive, impressive work. Eyes are split across more platforms and more creators than ever before. Marketing that worked in the past doesn’t hit the same way. And streaming as a model — Game Pass included — has largely been a financial black hole. It’s great for customers. But from the publisher’s standpoint, it’s not viable at its current state. Netflix is one of the very few platforms that’s figured out how to actually monetize streaming profitably.
This restructuring is much needed and it’s inevitable. Every legacy entertainment industry is going through it. If you’re paying attention to gaming, film, publishing, or any of these spaces — this is the reality everyone’s adjusting to.
