The fuel excise cut was ‘always temporary’, prices to be monitored closely into the future

Labor MP Jerome Laxale says while the fuel excise cut was always temporary, it will be closely monitored as the effects of the Iran war ripple through the economy.

“It wasn’t our intention to have a fuel excise cut in the first place. These things are very volatile,” he told News24.

“His [Shadow Science and Technology Minister Aaron Violi] cuts would have come from the very successful electric vehicle discount, which given the context of this war … would have probably been a ridiculous cut.

“This was always a temporary excise cut and we’ll need to keep on monitoring it into the future.”
