The Cost of Animation
How much does anime actually cost? A standard TV episode runs 25 to 50 million yen, roughly $160,000 to $320,000, and the head of ARCH and studio Graphinica said this year that top-end episodes now reach 300 million yen, about $1.9 million. A film at that tier: $25 million. But the real answer to “when are you making a full episode” is the production committee system, why most anime is a loss leader funded by toy companies and labels, why the studios that make it stay broke while the franchise prints money, and how we pointed that same structure at the audience instead through RippaWorks.
