The Advantage Nobody Talks About | Japan, Manga, Anime & The Advantage

Yes, anime and manga are outperforming Western comics and animation.
Yes, the quality coming out of Japan right now is strong.
But that’s not the whole story.
In this video, I break down the structural advantage Japanese creators have in the American market. When a mangaka creates a story, the primary filter is entertainment and commercial viability. They aren’t navigating American social landmines, activist pressure, or ideological gatekeeping tied to their personal identity.
American creators operate inside the culture war. Japanese creators export into it.
That difference matters.
This isn’t about claiming Japan is apolitical. It’s about recognizing that their creators are largely shielded from the American discourse machine — and that allows their work to be evaluated primarily on merit.
Until the Western ecosystem changes, that advantage isn’t going anywhere.
