‘Target on his back’: Successor to Khamenei faces immediate threats as Iran weighs next leader

ANU Middle East specialist Ian Parmeter discusses the potential successor of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“It will probably be quite soon, because the constitution of Iran says that the new supreme leader should be elected as soon as possible,” Mr Parmeter said.

“The new supreme leader, when he is elected, will of course have a target on his back.

“It well may be that they want to delay the election of the new supreme leader until the conflict at least winds down.”
