Supergirl Review: The DCU’s First Real Misstep

Supergirl Review: Milly Alcock Deserves Better. Nearly a year after Superman launched the new DC Universe, Supergirl arrives with high expectations and an entirely different kind of hero at its center.

Unlike Clark Kent, Kara Zor-El carries the trauma of Krypton’s destruction in a much more personal way. The film uses that grief as the foundation of its story, pairing Kara with Ruthy Marino on a revenge-driven journey across the cosmos. The result is a superhero adventure packed with exciting action, strong visual spectacle, and several genuinely emotional moments.

In this review, we examine why the movie succeeds whenever it focuses on Kara’s vulnerability, Krypto, and her relationship with Ruthy, while struggling whenever the larger plot takes center stage. We also discuss Jason Momoa’s entertaining debut as Lobo, the film’s handling of grief and revenge, and why the story never fully commits to defining its version of Supergirl.

Is Supergirl a disappointment? Not exactly. It’s an enjoyable summer blockbuster with a promising lead performance and plenty of potential for the future of the DCU. It just isn’t the breakout hit many fans were hoping for after Superman.
