CNN apparently looked at one of the biggest political formats online, copied the name, copied the table and copied the one-on-one debate setup—and hoped nobody would notice. Steven Crowder noticed. After CNN and Jubilee repeatedly called a James Talarico town-hall segment “Change My Mind,” Crowder announced that he is suing CNN, Jubilee and Talarico and told all three to lawyer up. Crowder called the alleged ripoff blatant and says he is coming for everything after they used his trademarked brand to promote a Democratic Senate candidate.
This was not a random phrase flashed on screen once. CNN repeatedly described the segment as “Change My Mind,” placed voters face-to-face with Talarico at a table and framed the exercise around whether he could persuade them. Crowder’s company holds an active registered trademark for CHANGE MY MIND covering online entertainment and political commentary. That registration does not guarantee he will win, and a filed complaint has not yet been independently confirmed—but CNN may now have to explain why its supposedly innovative format looks and sounds so familiar.
