Starbucks is facing a proposed class-action lawsuit over eight protein drinks advertised as “sugar-free.” The complaint alleges that venti servings actually contain between 13 and 21 grams of sugar—more than customers would reasonably expect from something carrying a sugar-free label.
Starbucks says the sugar comes naturally from lactose in its protein milk, that no sugar is added and that its nutritional information has always been clearly disclosed. The company says the lawsuit has no merit and plans to fight it, but customers are now asking whether “sugar-free” means anything at all.
