Star Wars: Why George Lucas Really Walked Away
George Lucas’ unmade Star Wars sequel trilogy has become one of the franchise’s biggest “what ifs,” especially after the divisive reception to Disney’s Episodes VII, VIII, and IX.
Lucas had story treatments ready when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, but he had also made a major personal decision: he didn’t want to spend another decade of his life making blockbuster movies. Years before the Disney sequels reached theaters, Lucas was already discussing retirement and his frustration with the reaction to the prequel trilogy.
Disney still made its own consequential choice. The company purchased Lucas’ treatments without committing to use them, eventually pursuing a different vision for The Force Awakens. Bob Iger later wrote that Lucas felt betrayed when he learned his ideas were being discarded.
So what would George Lucas’ Star Wars sequels actually have looked like? We explore his ideas involving the Whills and midi-chlorians, why those concepts represented a commercial risk, and the one advantage Lucas’ version unquestionably would have had: a single creative plan from beginning to end.
The bigger question isn’t whether Lucas’ trilogy would have been better. It’s what Star Wars lost when Disney rejected his roadmap without establishing one consistent replacement.
