‘Something odd has happened’: Questions deepen over Labor’s ‘premature’ migration cut proposal

Former Home Affairs secretary Mike Pezzullo says there is “something odd” about Labor’s supposed leaked migration cut.

The reports suggested the Albanese government was looking at cutting the refugee intake from 20,000 to 13,750, but the prime minister subsequently moved to shut down the proposal.

“It seems very premature for the cut to have been leaked; maybe it was deliberate to maybe try to get more resources,” Mr Pezzullo told News24.

“I don’t know what the situation is there.

“What’s of concern is here we are yet again, Mr Burke, who you know, is normally such a steady set of hands, and his department just being caught wrong-footed. I just don’t know what’s going on.

“The management of immigration just seems to have fallen apart in recent times.”
