Secret Wars: Thanos Can’t Return Just to Die

Thanos returning in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars could create an incredible confrontation with Doctor Doom, but Marvel needs to avoid turning the MCU’s most iconic villain into a disposable cameo.

Josh Brolin recently discussed his openness to playing Thanos again, particularly with Joe Russo involved. While nothing has been confirmed about his return, Marvel Comics provides a fascinating blueprint for what could happen if the Mad Titan encounters Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

In the 2015 Secret Wars comic, God Emperor Doom effortlessly kills Thanos in a gruesome demonstration of power. Recreating that scene would immediately establish Doom as a threat unlike anything the Avengers have faced before.

However, there’s a bigger story worth exploring.
Both villains believe their vision of the universe justifies extraordinary acts of destruction and control. Could Thanos recognize something familiar in Doom’s ambitions? Could their conflicting philosophies turn them against each other?

With new Avengers: Endgame encore footage teasing Doom’s moves against Bruce Banner, Thor, and a collapsing multiverse, Marvel already has the ingredients for an enormous conflict.
We break down the Secret Wars comic book showdown, what Josh Brolin’s comments actually mean, and why Thanos could play a much more important role in the Multiverse Saga than simply proving Doctor Doom is stronger.
