Polls close in New Zealand general election | BBC News

Votes are being counted in New Zealand, with incumbent PM Christopher Luxon’s National Party and Chris Hipkins’ Labour Party currently neck-and-neck.

Hipkins told supporters at an election night watch party that the direction of the vote is not yet clear, and the next Parliament will need to “work together” and “find a common ground”.

Meanwhile, the centrist Opportunity Party crossed the 5% threshold to enter parliament for the first time as the major parties see historically low votes.

New Zealand’s voting system – mixed member proportional – means most governments are coalitions.
