Lanterns Review: DC Finally Gets Green Lantern Right. HBO’s new DC series delivers the live-action Green Lantern adaptation fans have been waiting for, while proving its biggest creative risks were worth taking.
After watching every episode except the season finale, we break down why Lanterns succeeds as both a gritty crime thriller and a full-fledged DC superhero story. Kyle Chandler’s veteran Hal Jordan quickly puts concerns about the character’s age to rest, capturing Hal’s confidence, sarcasm, and experience while becoming a reluctant mentor to Aaron Pierre’s younger, more idealistic John Stewart.
That relationship becomes the heart of the series as Hal and John investigate a mysterious alien threat in Rushville. And despite early concerns that the True Detective-inspired approach would mean less classic Green Lantern spectacle, the show doesn’t abandon its comic book roots. There are energy constructs, major action sequences, and plenty of Green Lantern mythology woven into the drama.
We also dig into Kelly Macdonald’s intriguing role, Garrett Dillahunt’s mysterious William Macon, Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro, Nathan Fillion’s return as Guy Gardner, and the show’s surprising two-timeline structure.
