Lanterns Finale: What John Stewart’s Decision Really Means
Lanterns finally reveals who killed Hal Jordan, and the answer completely reframes the mystery at the center of the DCU series. Carrie Kane shot Hal while he was trying to protect her and Noah, but the circumstances surrounding his death turn the finale into something much more complicated than a simple whodunit.
We break down the Lanterns ending, including why Carrie killed Hal Jordan, why Noah falsely confessed to the murder, and what his decision tells Jon Stewart about the Manhunter he has become. Noah giving up the ring and protecting his mother becomes crucial to Jon’s decision not to kill him, even with the threat he could still pose.
Then there’s Jon Stewart’s own transformation. By protecting Noah, rejecting the Guardians’ authority, and accepting a Lantern connected to fear, Jon ends the season on a path that could put him directly against the Green Lantern Corps. Hal’s hologram also gets one final emotional goodbye before Jon delivers a remixed Green Lantern oath built around embracing fear rather than simply overcoming it.
With Hal Jordan’s death apparently permanent and Jon Stewart moving deeper into the DCU, the Lanterns finale may ultimately be less about solving Hal’s murder than explaining why Jon deserves to carry his legacy.
