It could get WORSE for gamers…

AMD’s CEO just called it a “data center first company,” and its gaming revenue fell 40% in a single year, while AI money pulled the whole hardware industry away from gamers.

In fiscal 2021, gaming was about 47% of NVIDIA and about a third of AMD. Today it’s about 7% of NVIDIA, NVIDIA stopped reporting gaming as its own category in May, and gaming was under 6% of AMD’s revenue last quarter. Micron shut down Crucial after almost 30 years. A 32GB kit of DDR5 went from under $100 to around $450. The Xbox Series X went from $499 to $799, and a leaker says the memory and storage alone in a PS6 would cost Sony over $680.

I go through how a graphics card actually gets made and why AI chips win every fight over factory time and memory. I also cover how much money and power the AI build-out is pulling in, and why “they’ll just add capacity” and “it’s a short-term problem” don’t hold up. Unless the AI bubble pops, the latest and greatest is turning into a luxury.
