Nine people were killed in the devastating Greenacres Learjet crash—and before authorities had formally identified those aboard, the internet decided it had solved the case. Viral posts named 21-year-old flight instructor Emily Shelton as the pilot and used a purported Facebook post to claim she had been flying Lenny Kravitz from Austin to the Bahamas. There was one enormous problem: Shelton is alive and says she was not the pilot.
Shelton was already recognizable after safely landing a failing Piper aircraft on Interstate 10 months earlier. Online accounts took that history, a screenshot and matching route endpoints and turned speculation into a public accusation. A fact-check found no evidence that Shelton or Kravitz was aboard, while Kravitz’s representative also denied the rumor. AP has since reported that another young pilot, Nathalia Filgueiras, was identified by her mother as one of the pilots, although authorities had not released a complete official manifest.
