A bombshell new report claims that two London residents pictured with one of Somalia’s most notorious former commanders are Ilhan Omar’s secret siblings. The New York Post identifies Mohamed Nur Said Elmi and Leila Nur Said Elmi through unnamed sources and says a January 2024 photograph shows them posing with Gen. Mohamed Said Hersi “Morgan,” who has been widely accused of mass atrocities and genocide against the Isaaq under Siad Barre.
Mohamed reportedly later praised Morgan and described a friendship between their families. The reporting also cites a British marriage certificate listing Leila’s father as Nur Said Elmi—the man sources identify as Omar’s father. Omar and the two London residents reportedly didn’t respond to requests for comment.
There are crucial limits to what this proves. Omar isn’t in the photograph, the alleged sibling relationships remain source-attributed and no evidence establishes that she met Morgan, knew about the photograph or endorsed his conduct. Critics are raising national-security questions, but Omar hasn’t been charged with terrorism or publicly found to present a national-security threat.
