‘God bless Australia’: Trump praises Albanese in call over Iranian women footballers
The Australian Federal Police is reportedly protecting five Iranian female soccer players after they escaped their team handlers on the Gold Coast.
It is understood the five women intend to seek asylum in Australia.
US President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the situation and revealed other players are also intending to seek protection.
The footballers are facing the risk of persecution in their home country after the team was accused of dishonour for not singing the national anthem before their match against South Korea.
Donald Trump praised Anthony Albanese for his response to the situation, saying he is doing a “very good job”.
