Geelong refinery fire shows how ‘vulnerable’ Australia is amid fuel crisis
Sky News host Caleb Bond reacts to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visiting the Viva oil refinery in Geelong, which was partially destroyed by a fire.
“Viva supplies about half of Victoria’s fuel and 10 per cent nationwide, but the PM said despite the damage, there would be no change to the national fuel security plan,” Mr Bond said.
“He also said the refinery would continue 60 per cent of its normal petrol output and 80 per cent of its typical diesel and jet fuel. But it really brings into focus the fact that we only have two refineries left in this country, that one in Geelong and one in Queensland, and they’re only secured by the government until next year. They’re talking at the moment about extending it to 2030, what happens after that, who knows?”
