DEBATE: Mainstream Vs. Indies: Is It Over? | The Lack of Innovation in the West

Mainstream versus indies, and whether the lack of innovation in the West is permanent. Open debate. Come make your case in chat.

This follows the video I put out on why the West stopped innovating in entertainment. My position in short: we are not in an era of discovery. On average people go to what is easily accessible, what looks ambitious, and what carries a name they already recognize. That attention is what gives the mega corporations their power, and it is a chicken and egg problem for everybody else, because commanding that kind of attention requires capital and getting the capital requires commanding the attention. It is why most of what breaks through turns out to have serious money behind it already.

What I want pushed back on tonight is whether the alternative scene is further along than I think it is, and whether the numbers actually say what I think they say.

Why the top of the box office is almost entirely legacy IP
Whether an alternative can exist at scale without mega corporation money
Whether people want an alternative at all, or just want the mega corporations to be better
What purposeful action from a customer actually looks like
Whether the West can get back to innovating, or whether that window closed
