Climate change ‘not the cause’ but a ‘significant factor’ in Nepal flooding

News24 Senior Meteorologist Rob Sharpe says climate change is a “significant factor” but not the cause of the Nepal flooding disaster, which has seen more than 500 people die.

“What we saw was that glacial chunk slide down the mountain and that caused the water in the river to surge … all the way into those communities,” Mr Sharpe said.

“Climate change is a significant factor in this. It’s not the cause, but it is a factor.

“It provides those preconditions for this to become more likely.”
