Chad Powers S2 Review: The Tone Shift Actually Works
Glen Powell’s ridiculous college football alter ego returns for Chad Powers Season 2, and the Hulu comedy has finally figured out exactly how far it can push its bizarre premise.
The new episodes build directly on Ricky discovering that Chad is actually disgraced quarterback Russ Holliday. Keeping that secret creates an entirely different dynamic between Powell and Perry Mattfeld, while Jerry’s jealousy, Coach Jake Hudson’s leadership, and the increasingly complicated Catfish season give the supporting cast plenty of opportunities to steal scenes.
That includes Steve Zahn, Frankie Rodriguez, Colton Ryan, and Toby Huss, whose characters help make Season 2 feel bigger without losing the strange comedic energy that made the first season work. Powell remains at the center of everything, effortlessly bouncing between Chad’s absurd dialogue and the more emotional consequences of Russ’ deception.
Then things get weird, even by Chad Powers standards.
A storyline developing throughout the season explodes during the final stretch and pushes the series surprisingly close to comedy-thriller territory. Instead of breaking the show, the tonal shift gives Russ’ double life real consequences and sets up a cliffhanger capable of completely reshaping what comes next. Season 2 proves this bizarre Eli Manning-inspired concept still has plenty left in the tank.
