Backrooms Just Proved Internet Horror Can Survive Hollywood | REVIEW

Backrooms Review dives into A24’s latest horror gamble, adapting Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube series into a feature-length psychological horror film. What could have easily become another internet trend cash-in instead turns into one of the most unsettling horror movies of the year.

The film centers on Clark, a struggling furniture store owner whose discovery of an impossible hidden labyrinth slowly consumes him. As he ventures deeper into the mysterious “complex,” the movie transforms from curiosity-driven mystery into a meditation on loneliness, addiction, and obsession. The deeper Clark goes, the more the Backrooms themselves become the film’s true protagonist.

Director Kane Parsons successfully preserves the eerie analog horror style that made his online videos explode in popularity, using long takes, handheld camerawork, and oppressive silence to create constant tension. The movie’s slow pacing and minimalistic approach won’t work for everyone, but fans of atmospheric horror and liminal space storytelling will find plenty to appreciate.

While the script occasionally struggles to balance its character drama with its massive mythology, Backrooms succeeds where many horror adaptations fail: it understands exactly why the original concept frightened people in the first place.
