AHS 13 Could Finally Make Its Shared Universe Matter
After years of mostly self-contained stories, American Horror Story Season 13 is turning the franchise’s interconnected history into the centerpiece of an unusually ambitious new chapter.
The Coven witches may be the obvious attraction, but Ryan Murphy is going considerably further. Jessica Lange is returning alongside Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, with several actors portraying multiple characters from across Murder House, Asylum, Hotel, Cult, Apocalypse, Double Feature, and beyond. It’s an approach that makes Season 13 feel less like another anthology installment and more like a culmination of the AHS universe built since 2011.
We examine how Apocalypse established the blueprint for an American Horror Story crossover, what the returning characters mean for the franchise’s increasingly complicated continuity, and why seeing actors potentially interact with themselves creates a fascinating production challenge.
But the scale comes with a major concern. Season 13 is packing its sprawling ensemble into 13 half-hour episodes while initially releasing multiple installments each week. That could eliminate some of the slower stretches previous seasons have struggled with—or leave an enormous cast without enough room to breathe.
Add Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch, John Waters, and several newcomers, and Season 13 is shaping up to be one of AHS’s most unusual experiments.
