20 years later.. STILL the gold standard

How can it be that after 20 years, Davy Jones is still considered the gold standard for a computer-generated character?

Created by the talented people at @ILMVFX for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), he has become one of the most iconic CG characters in film history. Led by Animation Supervisor Hal Hickel and VFX Supervisor John Knoll, the team at ILM developed, among other things, a brand new on-set motion capture system, as well as the engine behind Davy Jones’ beard.

They did such outstanding work that they deservedly won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects that year.
