Marsha’s opened on Philadelphia’s South Street in September 2025 with a huge mission: become the city’s first women’s sports bar and create a welcoming space centered on women’s athletics and the queer community. Opening night reportedly produced a three-hour line around the block. Just thirteen months later, it served its final customers on Sunday, October 18. The bar’s announcement simply called its final weekend a heartbreaking goodbye and did not publicly explain why it was shutting down. Owner Chivonn Anderson later gave her own explanation in separate interviews, saying the business never recovered after allegations from former employees triggered an enormous backlash.
Former manager and bartender Olivia Rhodes accused Marsha’s leadership of fostering a hostile environment and participating in or perpetuating transphobia, misogyny and retaliation. Anderson called the allegations false, released responses and hosted community listening sessions, but says reservations and customers disappeared anyway. According to Anderson, she personally kept the business afloat for six months before deciding she could no longer continue. She still owns the South Street property, plans to consider another tenant with a similar mission and has even left open the possibility that Marsha’s could return if public support changes. This is not a verified bankruptcy—it is a business built as a community safe space closing after a bitter, disputed fight over whether it lived up to that promise.
