‘Max & the Midknights’: Nickelodeon creates a stop-motion look with UE5
Watch this video to discover how ‘Max & the Midknights’ reinvented TV animation with a cinematic, stop-motion-inspired world built entirely in Unreal Engine—bringing feature-film scale, handcrafted charm, and thrilling adventure to Max’s story.
‘Max & the Midknights’ is an epic CG-animated comedy adventure about a young girl who dreams of becoming a knight and embarks on a quest to save her kingdom from King Gastley.
To create it, Nickelodeon flipped the traditional animation pipeline on its head, building the entire CG world first, then stepping inside it with virtual cameras to “shoot coverage” like a live-action production.
Directors would explore sets, block scenes, and shoot multiple angles—and after cutting footage into a preliminary edit, storyboard artists added character performance on top of the already-locked compositions.
