BBC Inside Iran: as Trump threatens “something very tough” if talks fail | BBC News

Donald Trump is threatening Iran with further military attacks if it does not meet his demands on issues including nuclear enrichment. The US President said Iran would face “something very tough” if negotiations do not succeed. He said he is considering sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East to prepare for military action.

The US and Iran resumed negotiations last week, for the first time since the 12 days of conflict in June 2025, when the US carried out airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Alongside the new talks, the US has begun a massive military build-up in the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group has already been deployed.

Donald Trump has claimed that Iran “wants to make a deal very badly”. However Tehran has said it won’t negotiate on any issues other than its nuclear program and won’t give up its right to enrich uranium. It’s accused of attempting to build a nuclear weapons but insists the enrichment programme is only intended for civil nuclear power.

The BBC is reporting from inside Iran for the first time since mass protests there were crushed in an authoritarian crackdown in which thousands of people were killed by the authoritiies.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lyse Doucet in Tehran and Sarah Smith in Washington.
