Democrats have spent weeks celebrating polls that appear to show a massive midterm wave—but CNN’s own election board just revealed the nightmare scenario hiding beneath those numbers.
CNN first mapped the final New York Times/Siena polling exactly as published, producing a 54–46 Democratic Senate. Harry Enten then tested what would happen if Republican candidates repeated their average Trump-era polling overperformance in close Senate races across Trump-won states.
That single adjustment moved Alaska, Texas, Kansas and Ohio into the Republican column and gave the GOP control of the Senate, 51–49.
That would completely change the story surrounding several supposed Democratic pickups and destroy the idea that control of the Senate is already settled. Abdul El-Sayed still held Michigan in CNN’s Republican scenario, but a handful of other races moving only a few points would be enough to preserve Republican control.
This is not CNN declaring that Republicans will win. CNN also modeled a Democratic polling overperformance that produced 55 Democratic seats, and Enten said he would rather be in the Democrats’ current position.
The real revelation is that this election remains extremely volatile—and a familiar polling miss could erase the projected blue wave overnight.
CNN wanted one final election-day certainty. Its own big board showed why nobody should be celebrating yet.
