Ilhan Omar finally sat down for her first television interview since federal agents searched her Washington home—and somehow gave the single worst answer imaginable. Chris Hayes brought up the longstanding allegation involving her former husband and asked whether there was any “weird kernel of truth” to the claim that the two were related. Omar’s answer? “Not to my knowledge.” Oh my God. Of every possible way to answer that question, those are the four words now exploding across the internet.
To be completely fair, because the full exchange matters, Omar had already called the allegation insane, explained where she believes it began and denied being related to her former husband. The viral quote is not a confession, DNA evidence or proof of marriage fraud. But when your home has just been searched, relatives have reportedly received grand-jury subpoenas and the entire country is examining your immigration history, “not to my knowledge” is spectacularly bad phrasing. Omar has not been charged and continues to deny wrongdoing, while the public evidence still does not prove the brother allegation. That does not make the answer any less bizarre—and this may be the clip that follows her for the rest of the investigation.
