Masked trans-rights protesters stormed the red carpet outside London’s Palace Theatre on Thursday, October 15, as celebrities and audience members arrived for a gala performance of the newly shortened Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Several activists lay across the carpet before security removed them, while one wore a shirt declaring “Rowling money kills.” The Guild of Angry Transsexuals claimed responsibility and argued that anyone continuing to spend money on the Harry Potter franchise helps fund J.K. Rowling’s media empire and her legal advocacy concerning sex and gender. The performance was not reported canceled, and there are no verified reports of injuries or arrests.
The new development came over the weekend when Rowling’s agent, Neil Blair, publicly pushed back. Blair said he respects peaceful activism and opposing views, but claimed Thursday’s actions put audience members, performers and theater staff at risk.
