The Exorcist: Martyrs Reopens a 13-Year-Old Nightmare
Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs is taking the legendary horror franchise in a completely different direction, and its first trailer reveals why this new approach could work.
Scarlett Johansson stars as Julie Miller, a New York detective investigating a series of gruesome murders connected to a serial killer she stopped 13 years earlier. But as the investigation unfolds, Julie begins questioning whether the killers claiming Satan made them do it might actually be telling the truth.
The Exorcist: Martyrs trailer introduces a supernatural murder mystery that has more in common with The Exorcist III than a traditional possession movie. We explore the connections between the two films, the influence of William Peter Blatty’s original stories, and why Mike Flanagan’s experience with Midnight Mass makes him uniquely suited to revive the franchise.
We also break down the movie’s impressive cast, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Carla Gugino, and examine how Universal is moving forward after The Exorcist: Believer failed to launch its planned trilogy.
With The Exorcist: Martyrs arriving in theaters March 12, 2027, could a detective story about faith, murder, and demonic possession finally give the franchise the fresh start it needs?
