DCU: Harley Quinn Is the Canon Wild Card

James Gunn’s DCU has already carried pieces of The Suicide Squad into its new continuity, but exactly how much of the 2021 movie still counts remains surprisingly complicated.

Creature Commandos officially launched the new connected DCU, while characters including Amanda Waller, Rick Flag Sr., Weasel, and Peacemaker create clear bridges back to Gunn’s earlier DC projects. DC Studios originally established that projects beginning with Creature Commandos would be connected canon, making these newer references especially important when determining what survived the transition.

We break the surviving Suicide Squad characters into four categories: definitely preserved, probably preserved, contradicted, and still unresolved. Rick Flag Jr.’s death has major consequences that continue through the new universe, while Weasel has already made the jump through Creature Commandos. Bloodsport, King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, and especially Harley Quinn raise much bigger questions.

Harley is the biggest wild card because her history stretches across Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad. With the DCU also introducing its own Batman, the eventual arrival of a new Joker could force Gunn to decide exactly which pieces of Harley’s past remain intact.

The question isn’t simply whether The Suicide Squad is canon. It’s how much James Gunn intends to keep.
