Thousands rally against Germany’s military expansion

​Thousands of people have rallied in Berlin against military expansion and a possible return of compulsory service.

​Police say around 5,800 people joined the demonstration at the Brandenburg Gate while organisers claimed a much larger turnout.

​The protest comes during heightened tensions over the war in Ukraine and broader European defence spending.

​Demonstrators accused Western governments of fearmongering over Russia and called for greater emphasis on diplomacy.
