Tarantino’s Cliff Booth Sequel Exposes His Final-Film Problem
Quentin Tarantino’s famous 10-movie rule was supposed to protect his legacy. Instead, his continued fascination with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Cliff Booth raises a very different question: what if Tarantino simply doesn’t want to stop?
For years, the filmmaker has argued that directors risk diminishing their legacies by continuing too long, pointing to late-career movies from legendary filmmakers like Billy Wilder. But history also offers plenty of counterexamples, from Akira Kurosawa and Clint Eastwood to Martin Scorsese. More importantly, a few weaker movies rarely erase the classics audiences already love.
That brings us to Cliff Booth. After Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino expanded Brad Pitt’s character through his novelization and has continued finding new ways to revisit that world. Now, with David Fincher directing another Tarantino-written Cliff Booth story, the director appears to have found a way to keep making movies without technically violating his self-imposed limit.
