Government criticised for ‘really overplaying its hand’ on renewable energy

The Australian’s Environment Editor Graham Lloyd says the government is “overplaying its hand” on renewable energy.

“AI has become the dominant issue for political discussion, certainly in the last couple of weeks. This comes on the eve of a big meeting between the US and China to talk about guardrails on the future development,” Mr Lloyd told News24.

“To the extent that Australia has a role, we are negotiating for the siting of data centres and other things in Australia, and that is a big political problem of its own.

“There’s the issues of guardrails, there are issues of power supply, water supply, and…a big game is taking place between these data centre proponents who are pushing back against government demands that they be powered with renewable energy and trying to trade off the copyright protections that are there for content creators.”
