Alien: Ridley Scott Is Going Back to His Biggest Loose End

Ridley Scott isn’t finished with the Alien universe, and his return could finally resolve one of the franchise’s darkest cliffhangers. Nearly a decade after Alien: Covenant, Scott says he’s working on a story that picks up where the 2017 prequel left off, putting Michael Fassbender’s rogue synthetic David back at the center.

That unfinished story suddenly feels even more relevant. David ended Covenant in control of a colony ship carrying thousands of sleeping humans, while his obsession with creation had transformed him from humanity’s servant into something convinced it should replace its creators.

We break down where Alien: Covenant left David, what Scott’s comparison to Ozymandias could reveal about the synthetic’s ultimate fate, and whether another prequel could finally bridge the remaining gap to 1979’s Alien. There’s also the question of how Alien: Romulus helped pull Scott back toward the franchise.

Most importantly, Scott’s recent warnings about artificial intelligence give David’s story a new dimension. A character created to serve humanity but ultimately deciding humanity is obsolete hits very differently now than it did in 2017. If Scott completes his prequel story, David may become the centerpiece of his most timely Alien movie yet.
