Well, HE’S RIGHT!

Jaleel White, the voice of Sonic and the guy you know as Urkel, said the 90s were the last decade with a real aesthetic imprint, and that it was the last analog generation. He’s right, and the reason why matters more than the nostalgia.

It isn’t that nothing memorable happened after. It’s that how we consume media fundamentally changed, so a shared culture can’t form the same way. Arcades with a roll of quarters. Midnight releases you physically showed up for. Grabbing a demo disc on the way out of the grocery store. Plans you had to keep because there was no texting. And the part I think about most: you experienced things honestly. You watched the movie or played the game and formed your own opinion, because you hadn’t already absorbed forty reviews and a discourse cycle about it first.

That’s why you can’t replicate it. Copy the aesthetic verbatim and it still won’t land, because the conditions that produced it are gone.
