Resident Evil: The Real Reason This Reboot Could Work. Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil movie isn’t giving fans the faithful video game adaptation many expected, but its controversial approach could finally crack the franchise’s biggest cinematic problem.
Rather than retelling Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, or Claire Redfield’s stories, the Barbarian and Weapons director is introducing a new protagonist played by Austin Abrams. His character is an organ transport driver sent toward Raccoon City, where things predictably become much more horrifying than a routine delivery.
The decision has divided Resident Evil fans. The winter setting, original monsters, unfamiliar protagonist, and apparent absence of the games’ biggest characters make this far from a traditional adaptation.
Yet there’s another side to Cregger’s approach. Instead of recreating a story gamers already know, the movie appears determined to recreate the experience of playing Resident Evil: isolation, limited resources, grotesque creatures, exploration, and the constant feeling that running might be smarter than fighting.
