No, I’m NOT a fan of this…

A lot of you asked me to comment on Sony’s announcement. Starting January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be digital only. Their reasoning is that consumer preference has shifted away from physical discs, and they’re right. I’ve covered this data before, and it’s crazy how much the industry switched to digital.
Here’s my honest take as someone who personally prefers physical media, not just because I own a comic company. Two things pushed us here. Yes, the companies nudged people toward digital, but our own habits prioritized convenience over everything. People would rather download instantly than wait for a midnight release, which used to be part of the culture. And a lot of physical discs became glorified digital downloads anyway. From Sony’s side, when the discs aren’t even being used the way they were intended, I can empathize with the question of why keep manufacturing them.
Running a comic company humbled me on this, because I have to look at worldwide trends. Plenty of people prefer no physical media, mostly for convenience and space.
Where I land is this. There’s real reason to be concerned. As digital only becomes the norm, you’ve seen censorship and how easily companies can revoke access. You can spend sixty dollars or more and lose it. That reality of not really owning anything worries me. We’ve seen physical rise in pockets, like vinyl and CDs. Maybe this triggers some awareness. Buyer habits got us here, and if they change, producers will adjust. But right now, people are choosing digital out of convenience. I get it as a business owner. As a customer, I don’t like it.
