Michael Jackson Succeeds Where Bruce Springsteen Failed – 5 Brutal Lessons
While Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu if anything is outperforming the tepid expectations, and we all wait to see how Masters of the Universe and Supergirl will do when they come out, Michael is the movie to beat so far this year. The question is no longer if the Michael Jackson biopic will cross the billion dollar threshold, but if it or Super Mario Galaxy will get their first!
Either way, what the one two combo of Michael knocking it outta park this year, combined with the Bob Dylan biopic a Complete Unknown knocking it outta the park late last year shows, is that if done right, biopics can be big business, especially music biopics … so expect Hollywood to greenlight many more of them in the years to come, now that Michael has demonstrated that Bohemian Rhapsody wasn’t a fluke, but a success that can be replicated!
However, it doesn’t always workout. There are some pitfalls, because before Michael, and just weeks before A Complete Unknown; the Bruce Spingsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere came out. Most of you might not even have heard about it, and that would be because it flopped upon release and sunk into oblivion instantly thereafter!
There are however reasons for that, as not all biopics are created equal. So, as a public service, let’s look at which lessons Hollywood should learn from the failure of Bruce Springsteen, on the cusp of the blockbuster musical biopic!
