Trump claims China considering release of political prisoners

US President Donald Trump claims China is considering the release of a detained pastor, but the case of jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai is different.

The pastor was arrested in November along with 30 others in the biggest crackdown on Christians in China since 2018.

Jimmy Lai, a Hong Kong media mogul, was sentenced to 20 years in jail over charges of foreign collusion.

Mr Trump says he got assurances from China’s President Xi Jinping to consider the release of political prisoners.
