Gollum FORCED them to Create New Technology.

In order to bring Andy Serkis’ performance to Gollum, the incredibly talented animators and VFX artists at WETA had to literally develop new technology. This is one of the reasons why Gollum’s character was so groundbreaking in CGI, back when The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001.
